The National Assembly should be responsible and responsive to the yearnings of the Nigerian people for a credible electoral system. All necessary Bills that are pending or that needs to be introduced should be given accelerated attention. Our legislators should be conscious of the historical and national imperative for electoral reforms.

A government that doesn’t serve the people has ultimately failed the country. I implore our government, organizations, and fellow esteemed Nigerians to lend their voice to this cause, so we can protect our right.In November 2019, the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria launched two bills which sparked an outrage on the internet. Several netizens vehemently rebuked these bills because they were regarded as infringements on our rights, particularly our freedom of speech and expression.

In November 2019, there was a furore in the Nigeria civil society space when two bills were introduced into the House of Representatives. Officially known as the “Protection from Internet Falsehood and Manipulation Bill 2019” and the “National Commission for the Prohibition of Hate Speeches Bill, 2019”, they quickly gained public notoriety as the “Social Media Bill” and the “Hate Speech Bill.”

A coalition of 407 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) in Nigeria have called on the government to ensure transparency and accountability in its disbursement and use of COVID-19-related funds. The CSOs also urged the government to prevent further abuses of human rights by law enforcement agencies.
